Dr. Burcu Sarı Karademir received her PhD degree with Distinction in the Department of International Relations at Bilkent University, Ankara, in 2012. Her dissertation, entitled “A Constructivist Analysis on Balancing: The Impact of the U.S. War on Terror on China and Russia,” examined the relationship between U.S. foreign policy and the balancing behaviour of major powers from a constructivist perspective. Following her doctorate, she pursued postdoctoral research on the impact of status-seeking on states’ balancing tendencies at the Arnold Saltzman Institute of War and Peace Studies, Columbia University, New York (2013–2014), under the supervision of Professor Robert Jervis. Her postdoctoral research project was awarded a TÜBİTAK Postdoctoral Research Scholarship in 2013. Burcu Sarı is a co-recipient of the 2023 Şirin Tekeli Research Incentive Support Award for their project entitled “Emancipating Women and Girls from Vulnerabilities Through A Social Reconstruction-Oriented Approach to Disaster Management”. Dr. Sarı worked in the Department of International Relations at Bilkent University and the Department of International Relations and Political Science at TED University, Ankara, Turkey. She is currently a faculty member at the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Çukurova University.
She is the co-founder of the SDG5 Network, an academic initiative dedicated to advancing gender equality and epistemic justice for disadvantaged groups in academia, and to fostering dialogue and collaboration between students and academics working in the field. Since 2024, she has also served as co-organizer of the free, online Critical Security and Foreign Policy Training Program, which has brought together more than 150 students and over 50 scholars, civil society activists, and journalists from more than 50 universities across Türkiye. The program aims to foster critical and inclusive academic dialogue, challenge epistemic injustices within knowledge production, and build solidarity among scholars, students, and practitioners working in the fields of international relations, political science, economics, sociology, and related disciplines across diverse institutional and social backgrounds.
Her research agenda spans critical security studies, feminist foreign policy, gender and development, purple degrowth, and disaster risk management. Her ongoing work develops interdisciplinary approaches combining feminist institutionalism, critical security studies, and strategic-relational state theory to examine gendered vulnerabilities, disaster governance, feminist foreign policy, and emancipatory resilience.
Dr. Sarı Karademir is co-editor, together with Zuhal Yeşilyurt Gündüz and Zehra Yılmaz, of the volume Feminist Dış Politika: Türkiye’de Haklar, Temsil, Kaynaklar ve Gerçeklik. In the same volume, she authored the chapter “Feminist Dış Politika ve Türkiye’de KBG Gündemi: Tutarlılık–Araçsallaştırma Gerilimi [Feminist Foreign Policy and the WPS Agenda in Türkiye: The Tension between Coherence and Instrumentalisation],” which examines the tensions between normative coherence and instrumentalisation within the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda in Türkiye. She also co-authored “Feministische Außenpolitik: Rechte, Repräsentation, Ressourcen und Realität in der Türkei” and “Geschlechtergleichheit als Herausforderung für die Türkei” with Zuhal Yeşilyurt Gündüz and Zehra Yılmaz, published in the WeltTrends.

Dr. Burcu Sarı Karademir, 2012 yılında Bilkent Üniversitesi Uluslararası İlişkiler Bölümü’nden üstünbaşarılı bulunarak doktor unvanını almıştır. “A Constructivist Analysis on Balancing: The Impact of the U.S. War on Terror on China and Russia” başlıklı tezi, ABD dış politikası ile büyük güçlerin dengeleme davranışları arasındaki ilişkiyi inşacı bir perspektiften incelemiştir. 2024’ten bu yana, Türkiye genelinde 50’den fazla üniversiteden 150’yi aşkın öğrenci ve 50’den fazla akademisyeni bir araya getiren ücretsiz ve dijital olarak gerçekleştirilen Eleştirel Güvenlik ve Dış Politika Eğitim Programı‘nın ortak organizatörü olarak görev yapmaktadır. SDG5 Network, Uluslararası İlişkiler, Siyaset Bilimi, İktisat ve Sosyoloji alanlarındaki akademisyenler ile sivil toplum aktivistleri, gazeteciler ve farklı kurumlardan çeşitli geçmişlere sahip öğrencileri epistemik adaletsizlikle mücadele etmek ve dayanışma inşa etmek amacıyla buluşturmaktadır.
Araştırma alanları eleştirel güvenlik çalışmaları, feminist dış politika, toplumsal cinsiyet ve kalkınma, mor küçülme ve afet risk yönetimini kapsamaktadır. Devam eden çalışmaları, toplumsal cinsiyete dayalı kırılganlıkları, afet yönetişimini, feminist dış politikayı ve özgürleştirici dayanıklılığı ele almak üzere feminist kurumsalcılığı, eleştirel güvenlik çalışmalarını ve stratejik-ilişkisel devlet kuramını bir araya getiren disiplinlerarası yaklaşımlar geliştirmektedir.
Dr. Sarı Karademir, Zuhal Yeşilyurt Gündüz ve Zehra Yılmaz ile birlikte Feminist Dış Politika: Türkiye’de Haklar, Temsil, Kaynaklar ve Gerçeklik adlı derlemenin ortak editörüdür. Aynı derlemede “Feminist Dış Politika ve Türkiye’de KBG Gündemi: Tutarlılık–Araçsallaştırma Gerilimi” başlıklı bölümü kaleme almıştır; bu bölüm, Türkiye’de Kadın, Barış ve Güvenlik gündeminin uygulanmasında normatif tutarlılık ile araçsallaştırma arasındaki gerilimi incelemektedir.
